Caring for Your Bella Sugar Flowers

Your Bella Sugar Flowers are individually handcrafted and carefully packaged to protect their delicate petals, leaves and details during transit. With proper handling and storage, handcrafted sugar flowers for wedding cakes can remain beautiful far longer than fresh flowers when handled and stored correctly. Follow the care steps below to keep them protected until you're ready to style your cake.

Sugar Flower Care – From Arrival to Cake

Step 1

  • Open Carefully: Remove the outer shipping materials and protective packaging gently. Avoid pulling flowers by their petals, leaves or wired stems.

  • Handle with Care: Sugar flowers are delicate by nature. Always lift larger flowers from their base or strongest support point rather than by individual petals.

  • Inspect Your Order: Check your flowers shortly after delivery to ensure everything has arrived safely. If you notice any damage, photograph the flowers and packaging before handling them further and contact Bella Sugar Craft promptly.

Step 2

  • Keep Them Dry: Moisture and humidity are the biggest enemies of sugar flowers. Keep them completely dry and away from water, steam and condensation.

  • Store at Room Temperature: Keep your flowers in their original packaging in a cool, dry room until you're ready to use them.

  • Avoid Refrigeration: Do not refrigerate or freeze sugar flowers. Refrigerators can introduce moisture and condensation, which may soften the sugar and affect colours and delicate details.

  • Avoid Direct Sunlight & Heat: Keep your flowers away from windows, direct sunlight, ovens, radiators and other heat sources. Prolonged exposure can affect both their structure and colour.

Store Until Ready to Use

Step 3

  • Handle from the Base: When removing each flower, support it from underneath or hold the wired stem rather than the petals.

  • Work with Clean, Dry Hands: Oils, moisture and food residue can mark delicate petals and foliage.

  • Allow Time for Styling: Unpack and organise your flowers before beginning your cake design so you can plan placement without unnecessary handling.

  • Never Force a Flower into Position: Sugar petals are delicate. Adjust the supporting wire or placement rather than bending or pressing the flower itself.

Step 4

  • Plan Before Placing: Arrange your flowers beside the cake first to determine your composition before inserting or attaching them.

  • Use Food-Safe Placement Methods: Wired sugar flowers should be inserted into an appropriate food-safe flower pick, posy pick or other protective barrier before being placed into a cake. Do not insert exposed floral wires directly into the cake.

  • Keep Flowers Away from Moisture: Avoid placing sugar flowers directly against very wet surfaces, fresh fruit, condensation or other moisture-heavy decorations.

  • Add Flowers as a Finishing Detail: Whenever possible, place your sugar flowers onto the cake toward the end of the decorating process to minimize unnecessary handling.

Style Your Cake

Step 5

One of the beautiful qualities of sugar flowers is that they can often be kept as a keepsake long after the celebration.

  • Remove Carefully: Gently remove the flowers from the cake, handling them from their base.

  • Keep Dry: If the flowers have come into contact with buttercream or other cake surfaces, allow any surface moisture to dry naturally before storing.

  • Store Protected: Place them in a clean, dry box away from humidity, sunlight, heat and dust.

With proper care, your Bella Sugar Flowers can remain a beautiful reminder of your celebration for months—or even longer.
